When you put your wheel on your go kart you then put a lug nut on to keep the wheel on the kart but you don't put the nut on tight like a car because then the wheel won't turn but the nut stays on the cart and does not come off. How does that work what keeps it in place?|||The nut is called a Castle Nut, it has notches cut in it on the top. The axle shaft has a small hole drilled through it. You tighten down the nut tight, then back it off so the wheel spins freely. Line up a pair of the notches on the nut with the hole in the axle shaft, then you insert a cotter pin through the notches in the nut and hole in the axle shaft. Bend the two ends of the cotter pin back over the outside end of the nut /axle and the nut is locked in place so it cant come off.
To remove the nut, you can bend the cotter pin back, and pull it back out, or snip it off with a pair of wire cutters and pull off the end. Just remember to put the cotter pin back on when you are done.
Used to be the same set up on regular rear wheel drive cars to hold the front wheel bearings on.
